United V QPR Match Guide

Form guide
There's no doubting that seven wins on the spin for United is championship form - in fact, the Reds have now racked up 10 victories and one draw (Chelsea away) from the last 11 fixtures in the league. There were three consecutive defeats in the Europa League but the focus domestically has been spot on. Meanwhile, Queens Park Rangers have only accrued two points from their last nine Barclays Premier League fixtures on the road since winning at Stoke. However, Mark Hughes' charges have boosted their survival hopes with shock home successes against Liverpool and Arsenal.

Ins and outs
Nani is ready to return for United after a full week of training, but Anderson and Michael Owen are still unavailable, as are . long-term absentees Nemanja Vidic and Darren Fletcher. Ashley Young will hope his impressive stint as a substitute at Blackburn will earn him a recall. As for QPR, former Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse is suspended but Heidar Helguson and DJ Campbell look likely to be ready to return after groin and hamstring injuries. Federico Macheda is out after an ankle operation but the on-loan Ranger would have been ineligible in any case. Kieron Dyer and Alejandro Faurlin are sidelined.

Last meeting
The Reds defeated the West Londoners 2-0 a week before Christmas with Wayne Rooney's first-minute opener and Michael Carrick's solo effort doing the damage. For the last Old Trafford encounter in the league, you have to go all the way back to 1995 when Andy Cole and Ryan Giggs scored - and William Prunier played - in a 2-1 triumph, with substitute Danny Dichio replying for Rangers. The
sides met in Manchester more recently in the Carling Cup, back in 2008 with Carlos Tevez netting the only goal from the penalty spot.

Opposition boss
Mark Hughes had a tough task keeping the capital club up after replacing Neil Warnock but he's making progress and, according to Sir Alex, has "galvanised" his side. A great United striker in his hey-day, following two spells at Old Trafford, he was a major contributor to the Reds' cause in the 1980s and 1990s. 'Sparky' played for a number of clubs after leaving the club in 1995 and his management CV includes Wales, Blackburn and, of course, Manchester City. It was a surprise when he left Fulham last year but he's managed to obtain employment just up the road on a two-and-a-half year contract.

Star man
Bobby Zamora has been described this week as the best lone striker in the top flight by his manager and the QPR hitman has caused United problems in the past. A muscular threat who never gives centre-backs a moment's peace, he has scored two goals for his new club since moving across London from Fulham in January. Zamora scored in the 3-0 defeat of Sir Alex's side in 2009 for the Cottagers and he will be a handful again this weekend.

Quote/unquote
"There's no doubts certain elements of my approach are the same as Sir Alex's. I would be crazy if they weren't. If I had to name them, it is his demands on players, his attention to detail - and his will to win" - QPR boss Mark Hughes.

Sub-plots
Mark Hughes has some history with the club he served so well as a player since taking to management, most notably in his time as City boss - including in the famous 4-3 derby at Old Trafford. Rangers' relegation battle has received a real boost with the wins against Liverpool and Arsenal and confidence will be high for Sunday's trip. Of course, the title race dominates United's thoughts and there is the opportunity to go eight points clear at the top on the final whistle.

Rivals watch
Manchester City have a difficult examination at Arsenal with the match kicking off soon after the finish at the Theatre of Dreams. Victory for the Reds would heap more pressure onto Roberto Mancini's men going into the Emirates Stadium encounter. Sunderland vs Tottenham and Liverpool vs Aston Villa are two eye-catching fixtures on Saturday.

United V Ajax Match Guide

Form guide
Four-time European champions Ajax are arguably the definition of sleeping giants. Famed for their stylish and successful football throughout the early 1970s, they have not lifted silverware on the continent since the 1995 Champions League triumph. Domestically, they're the title holders but a recent run of poor form has left them sixth in this season's Eredivisie. Their 2-0 away win over NAC Breda at the weekend was the first victory of the calendar year for Frank De Boer’s men - a big contrast with the Reds who have won five out of eight in 2012 so far, including away triumphs over Manchester City and Arsenal plus Saturday’s crowd-pleasing win over Liverpool.

Ins and outs
Central defenders Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen both returned for Ajax against NAC Breda, but Ajax had problems in midfield with Theo Janssen missing the game altogether and Eyong Enoh withdrawing after half an hour with a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, with no FA Cup fixture to fulfil this weekend, Sir Alex is able to select his strongest midweek team without a worry. The boss has plenty of options with Tom Cleverley, Nani, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling all back in the squad after injuries. Three notable absentees from the travelling party, however, are Dimitar Berbatov, Patrice Evra and Ryan Giggs.

Last meetingDespite being two of the most decorated clubs in European football, Ajax and United haveonly twice met competitively - home and away in the first round of the 1976/77 UEFA Cup. The Dutch giants won 1-0 in Amsterdam, before goals from Lou Macari and Sammy McIlroy in the second leg at Old Trafford ensured the Reds triumphed 2-1 on aggregate.

Opposition boss
As one half of Dutch football’s most famous twins, Frank de Boer enjoyed a glittering playing career, teaming up with his brother Ronald at Ajax, Barcelona and Rangers. Upon his retirement in 2007, Holland's most capped outfield player secured a youth coaching role at the Amsterdam ArenA. He gained senior experience when assisting national-team manager Bert van Marwijk at the 2010 World Cup and was appointed temporary boss of his beloved Ajax later that year following Martin Jol’s resignation. The Dutch title was won during his first season in charge, and secured on his 41st birthday. No wonder there have been rumours of a return to Barcelona in the event of Pep Guardiola moving on.

Star man
Christian Eriksen is a man to watch after months of speculation linking the Dane with a move to Old Trafford. When recently probed on the matter, Sir Alex revealed that the 20-year-old is being monitored by a host of Europe’s top clubs. “There's a lot of attention on the young kid, you know, the Danish boy," admitted the United boss. "We'll see what he's like and obviously everybody is going to be watching him.”

Quote/unquote“There is definitely a sense that it would be great to win it because it is something I have never won. It was disappointing to go out of the Champions League, you never want to go out, but we’re out of it and there is nothing we can do about it, so let’s go and win the Europa League now." – Ryan Giggs

Sub-plots“Thursday nights, Channel Five,” is the chant that has echoed around Old Trafford with ironic cheer after United’s defeat in Basel sealed entry into this season’s Europa League. You can expect to hear the now familiar tune again in Amsterdam - but make sure you don't miss the early kick-off. Thursday's game starts at 18:00 GMT, as opposed to the usual 19:45 in the Champions League.

Whistle blower
Gianluca Rocchi will take charge of Thursday’s clash at the Amsterdam Arena. The Italian referee has dished out 62 yellow cards and two red cards from 14 games this season, including two Champions League games involving Arsenal (1-1 away to Borussia Dortmund) and Chelsea (3-0 at home to Valencia).

Rivals watch
In another early kick-off, United's potential opponents in the next round - Lokomotiv Moscow and Athletic Bilbao - meet in the Russian capital. In the later games (kick-off 20:05 GMT), Manchester City have the daunting task of facing holders FC Porto in Portugal while fellow English contenders Stoke City host Valencia in what is possibly the biggest match in the Potters' history

United V Bolton Player Ratings

Anders Lindegaard: The Dane was a virtual spectator, limited to routine jobs like collecting Bolton's first corner.

Rafael: Showed a willingness to go forward, and linked up well with Valencia down the right. Made a brave block to deny Martin Petrov, and also made an important goal-line clearance with the score still at 1-0.

Rio Ferdinand: Solid performance from the long-serving defender. One fine run which included a nutmeg on an opponent had the crowd chanting his name.

Jonny Evans: Looked confident on the ball and was prepared to drive forward when the opportunity allowed. Along with Ferdinand, he kept the Bolton attack largely quiet.

Patrice Evra: The captain's positioning was usually spot on at the back; was relatively quiet going forward but went close with a header from a corner.

Antonio Valencia: A superb attacking and crossing display from the Ecuadorian. He constantly found space wide on the right, and supplied a clever throughball for Welbeck to win the penalty.

Michael Carrick: An assured performance featured some excellent passing - for example, a perfectly-weighted ball to set up Welbeck for an early chance. Capped a fine display with an accurate sidefoot finish for United's third goal.

Paul Scholes: Talk about a dream return to OT! The midfielder's name generated the loudest cheer prior to kick-off, and he rewarded the fans by opening the scoring from close range on the stroke of half-time.

Nani: Saw a dangerous cross palmed away by Bogdan, and worried the Bolton back line with his direct running. Was involved in the first goal and looked bright.

Wayne Rooney: After seeing his penalty well saved, he worked hard to make amends, and his persistance to force a way through the Bolton back line led to Welbeck's goal. Could have had a goal himself when he prodded Valencia's cross wide on the stretch.

Danny Welbeck: Tested Bolton keeper Bogdan, and made an intelligent run to win the spot kick. Showed plenty of energy and hard work, and tracked back well to make tackles. His goal was precisely finished and well deserved.

Subs

Ji-sung Park (for Scholes, 69): Looked lively after coming on and was a willing runner. Took up some good attacking positions in the box.

Ryan Giggs (for Nani, 69): Showed some neat touches, with one inch-perfect crossfield ball to Valencia. Claimed an assist when he set up Carrick's goal.

Javier Hernandez (for Welbeck, 78): Came on after Welbeck was injured while scoring, and almost netted himself when he met yet another Valencia cross.
